She merely scratches the surface of these individuals. ![]() (I don't include Fred Maurer in the above list since his diary didn't survive and hence he doesn't get as much coverage as the others.) So the question Niven poses on page 2, "Who was Ada Blackjack?," is not fully answered. It isn't any more her biography than it is of Vilhjalmur Stefansson, Allan Crawford, Lorne Knight, or Milton Galle. Ada Blackjack isn't a bad book, by any means, and I enjoyed it, but it isn't nearly as good as The Ice Master.įirst of all, it is supposed to a biography of Ada Blackjack. If you go into this book expecting a better book than Niven's brilliant first effort you'll be somewhat disappointed. ![]()

The novel’s protagonists are Ray Smith and Japhy Ryder, based on Kerouac himself and his dear friend and writer Gary Snyder (who had largely introduced him to Buddhism), on a semi-fictional journey of self-discovery in the wild. The relationship between Buddhism and sexuality can be observed in Jack Kerouac’s novel The Dharma Bums, published in 1958. All of this inevitably clashed, or merged, with the Buddhist faith that most of the Beats came in contact with, for different time spans and definitely with different results. Beat writers were, and still are, famous for advocating sexual liberation and free love, being open about their homosexuality when that was the case (like Allen Ginsberg did for all his life), and much of their literary production is filled thoroughly with erotic experiences. The Beat Generation has always been associated, and rightfully so, with themes connected to sexuality. ![]() ![]() Estés helps us rediscover and free our own wild nature.īedtime Stories: As a child growing up in a family of cantadoras (keepers of the old stories), Clarissa Pinkola Estés learned first-hand how a story told at bedtime can soothe away the troubles of the day and prepare the way for another night's dreams to follow. ![]() Through magical storytelling and an exploration into the nature of the wild woman archetype, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés as one of the most important voices of our time in the fields of Jungian psychology, myth, and women's mysteries. Since this is a sequel, this review will contain spoilers for the first book starting immediately. Eon will give more background on events important to the second book and is a decent book on its own, although I do think Eona is the stronger book. While Eona is supposed to work as a stand alone novel and contains the major details from the previous book in infodump form on occasion, I’d recommend reading Eon first. These books have also been marketed for both YA and adult readers depending on the publisher/country. ![]() Likewise, Eona has several different titles depending on which part of the world it is in and has also been released as Eona: Return of the Dragoneye and The Necklace of the Gods.
